FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEOTomorrow is election day and there’s an important measure on the ballot for KCMO. Voters are being asked to renew the 3/8ths cent sales tax that generates about 30 percent of the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority budget. The tax helps pay for bus service in KCMO, serving more than one million bus trips each month.This is not a new tax increase; instead it’s a 10-year renewal of the existing sales tax which is set to expire in 2024. The tax was last renewed by voters in 2008. Read Article

FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEODespite recent progress, women are still paid less than men, and, according to data, the pay gap worsens with age. Women bear a disproportionate burden from family caregiving responsibilities leading many to either reduce their work hours or leave employment altogether. (One of the reasons the KC Chamber works so hard to promote childcare accessibility.) And only 22 percent of board seats and C-suite roles are held by women.There’s still a long way to go, obviously. It’s our annual Leadership Exchange – our 20th, in fact – and the purpose is to learn what we can from a peer city.Pre-K: Thanks to a 1/8th cent sales tax, San Antonio offers free early education to its youngest residents through an initiative called PreK 4 SA. We’ll hear from the CEO of that effort and the owner of the San Antonio Spurs – the main cheerleader for PreK 4 SA. Read Article
