FROM THE KC CHAMBER’S PRESIDENT AND CEO
Friday’s opening of the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension is more than a ribbon cutting; it’s a regional win that connects more people to more opportunity, from the River Market to UMKC. The line links students to classrooms, workers to jobs, families to cultural institutions, and visitors to the small businesses that give our community its character. It’s a tangible step toward a Kansas City that moves more easily, grows more inclusively, and welcomes the world in 2026 and beyond.
What stands out is the collaboration that got us here. City leadership, the KC Streetcar Authority, federal partners, neighborhood advocates, and the business community worked side-by-side to deliver reliable, modern transit that serves people on both sides of the state line. That kind of partnership is how our region solves big challenges and builds for the long term. It’s how durable, positive progress happens.
Opening weekend specials and neighborhood events along the route offered a glimpse of the everyday benefits: fuller dining rooms and retail shops, fresh energy in our cultural districts, and easier access for residents and visitors exploring Main Street. The extension is already doing what great infrastructure does: stitching together places and people, supporting local success, and setting the table for future investment. It should also inspire us to keep discussing how expanded transit can further connect our KC region.
Thank you to everyone who played a role: elected officials, public agencies, private sector partners, and community champions. Your persistence made this possible. If you haven’t yet, plan a ride, visit a new stop, and support a nearby business. Together, we’re building a better Kansas City for all, and this milestone moves us forward, one connection at a time.

Kansas City’s small businesses are the makers, problem-solvers, and neighbors who keep our regional community humming. Now’s the time to lift them up. The Small Business Superstars program is accepting submissions through November 5.
Who’s eligible? Any for-profit business with 1–250 employees in the Greater KC region. Think of the coffee shop that knows your order, the contractor who always shows up, the creative studio pushing fresh ideas, the tech team building the next solution; if they make your day better, they deserve a nod.
Submitting is quick, and the recognition shines a wider light on the people and places that make Kansas City special. It all starts with your submission, so take a minute today and help celebrate your favorite small businesses.
