Congratulations, UMKC! | Small Business Awards | Neighborhood Networking - Moss Marketing Group | and more...

FROM THE KC CHAMBER’S PRESIDENT AND CEO

This is a moment of celebration for Kansas City! The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has officially joined the ranks of the nation’s top research universities, earning the prestigious Carnegie R1 classification. This isn’t just a milestone for UMKC — it’s a victory for our entire region.

R1 status, awarded to institutions with the highest levels of research activity, cements UMKC’s place as a powerhouse of innovation and discovery. It means more world-class talent, more cutting-edge research, and more opportunities for Kansas City businesses to collaborate and grow. With $55 million invested in research last year and a record number of doctoral degrees awarded, UMKC has proven its commitment to excellence and the impact will be felt far beyond campus.

For our business community, this is game-changing. R1 universities attract top researchers, industry partnerships, and major investment, fueling economic growth and job creation right here in Kansas City. It means a stronger talent pipeline, more innovation-driven startups, and increased national recognition for our region as a hub for high-level research and development.
Chancellor Mauli Agrawal called this achievement “a huge victory for all of the Kansas City area and its top research university.” And he’s absolutely right. This moment belongs to UMKC, to Kansas City, and to all of us who believe in the power of education and innovation to shape our future.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate this historic achievement and look ahead to the exciting opportunities it brings to our region. Congratulations, UMKC!
