Happy August! We’re already past the halfway mark of what’s been a fantastic year.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Happy August! We’re already past the halfway mark of what’s been a fantastic year. So far, we’ve hosted two Talking Trade events, welcomed two delegations, partnered on two great programs with Husch Blackwell, and wrapped up a successful Heartland Export Accelerator cohort. It’s been a busy few months, and we’re excited for what August has in store. We hope you find the updates below helpful as we head into a strong second half of the year!

Join us on September 4 for another EXIM Bank and Small Business Administration Export and Lender Roundtable on export financing. This session is designed for current exporters, those exploring new markets, and lenders or brokers interested in how EXIM’s services can support international growth. Make sure you save the date!

On September 8, WTC-KC will host the Portugal Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) and the Embassy of Portugal in Washington, D.C. for a Doing Business with Portugal event. The program will feature Francisco Duarte Lopes, Ambassador of Portugal to the United States, and Mário Quina, Director of AICEP Chicago and Economic Counselor at the Embassy.

Join us for an in-depth discussion on Portugal’s perspective on key transatlantic economic priorities. Learn more and register here.

Thank you for your continued engagement with WTC-KC. We look forward to bringing you more updates next month. For any trade-related inquiries, please contact us.

DISPATCHES FROM DC

U.S. and EU Reach Trade Agreement Amid Tariff Negotiations

After extensive negotiations, President Trump announced on July 27 that the United States and the European Union have reached a trade agreement. The announcement followed his meeting with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during his visit to Scotland. As part of the deal, a 15 percent tariff will be imposed on most European exports to the U.S., a significant reduction from the previously proposed 30 percent tariff. (USA Today).

The EU and the U.S. share the world’s largest bilateral trade and investment relationship, with total trade in goods and services reaching $1.96 trillion last year, according to the European Commission. With such a vital economic partnership at stake, EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič warned last month that tariffs of 30% or higher could significantly disrupt transatlantic trade (CNN).

Although the final terms exceeded what the EU had hoped for, President von der Leyen expressed optimism, stating the deal will “rebalance but enable trade on both sides” (Barron’s). The agreement also outlines $600 billion in EU investments in the United States and includes the EU’s purchase of $750 billion worth of U.S. energy.
