The First Outdoor Chess Park in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, KS/MO Oct. 2, 2026  — Rock Island Bridge announces the addition and Grand Opening of Kansas City Chess Park, Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 11:30 am.

Located on the bridge’s West Truss, Kansas City Chess Park is the city’s first dedicated outdoor chess park, featuring permanent game tables overlooking the Kansas River.

“Chess is a universally played game that has the ability to cross every divide this city has: age, race, income, language, red-line, state-line,” said Rock Island Bridge Creative Program Directors, kate and Skiggity. “Even if you lose, there’s something to be gained from the interaction.”

Rock Island Bridge—an entertainment district, public park and community gathering place connecting Kansas and Missouri—is a member of the High Line Network, an international group transforming infrastructure into vibrant, equitable public spaces.

“We’re the nation’s first entertainment district on a bridge over a river and, as far as we can tell, the world’s first chess park on a bridge,” said Rock Island Bridge CEO Mike Zeller. “We hope people make it part of their routine: come to the bridge, enjoy the views and maybe a drink or a meal… and make new friends playing chess over the river.”

The Grand Opening celebration of Kansas City Chess Park is Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:30 am.

Kansas City Chess Park is free and open to players of all ages and skill levels. Guests may bring their own pieces or play with the free sets available in the park.

Rock Island Bridge and Kansas City Chess Park are currently accessible only from the Missouri entrance at 1799 American Royal Drive, behind Hy-Vee Arena. The Kansas-side entrance is expected to open in Fall 2026.

Beginning October 3, park hours will be:

Sunday–Thursday: 11 a.m.–10 p.m.
Friday–Saturday: 11 a.m.–11 p.m.

Kansas City Chess Park will occasionally close during concerts and festivals. Updates will be posted at rockislandkc.com and on Instagram at @rockislandkc.
