FROM THE KC CHAMBER’S PRESIDENT AND CEO
The KC Chamber Board of Directors took an important step forward last week in addressing one of the most pressing and visible challenges facing our region: housing and homelessness.
At our April 27 meeting, the Board, guided by the leadership of Kevin Barth, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Commerce Bank, approved a resolution supporting the Kansas City Housing Gateway Program. This action reinforces our commitment not only to expanding access to attainable housing but to advancing a coordinated, outcomes-driven approach to reducing homelessness across the metropolitan area.
At the center of this effort is a focus on achieving “Functional Zero,” a measurable standard where homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring. Modeled after successful efforts in cities like Houston and supported by national expertise, the program is designed to better align systems, data, and resources to move individuals and families more quickly into stable housing.
Housing is not just a community issue. It is an economic imperative. Employers across our region are feeling the strain, from workforce recruitment to long-term retention. When individuals lack stable housing, the impacts ripple across our economy and quality of life.
The Housing Gateway Program represents a collaborative, market-informed approach. By aligning public and private sector efforts, it aims to streamline processes, improve coordination, and expand pathways to housing stability.
There is important work ahead. And the KC Chamber will continue to advocate for solutions that strengthen our housing ecosystem and support a growing, inclusive region for all who live, work, and visit Kansas City.
ATHENA AWARD NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN
Each year, the KC Chamber’s ATHENA Awards shine a light on individuals who are not only achieving at the highest levels professionally but who are also lifting others along the way. Nominations are now open for both the ATHENA Leadership Award and the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award, two of our region’s most prestigious honors for women’s leadership.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ATHENA Awards in Kansas City, a milestone that underscores the lasting impact of leaders who strengthen our community and create opportunities for others. Inspired by the Greek goddess known for wisdom, strength, and courage, the ATHENA Awards celebrate those who embody these qualities in their work and in their communities.
Honorees are recognized for professional excellence, meaningful community impact, and a deep commitment to helping other women succeed. As part of a global program, the ATHENA Awards connect Kansas City to a broader movement advancing leadership and opportunity for women around the world. From established leaders to rising professionals, the ATHENA program reflects the strength, collaboration, and forward momentum that define our metropolitan area. It is a powerful reminder that when one leader invests in others, the impact extends far beyond a single organization or industry.
