FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEO

Congratulations to two exemplary Kansas City women: Marian McClellan and Lauren Conaway. The two have been named the KC Chamber’s 2023 ATHENA Leadership Award recipients. Both will be honored at a special reception September 20 at Loews Hotel, presented by KPMG and UMB. (Click here to register.)

The ATHENA Awards are named after the Greek goddess Athena, a symbol of strength, courage, wisdom, and enlightenment and recognizes not only exemplary leadership and service, but also honors an individual who has actively assisted in opening doors for women.

Marian McClellan will receive the ATHENA Leadership Award in recognition of her professional excellence, community service, and for actively assisting women in their achievement of professional excellence and leadership skills. She is a Program Consultant for the Kansas City STEM Alliance in support of girls who are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). She believes strongly that equity in education is a moral imperative. She supported women throughout her 30-year career in the corporate world, then moved to nonprofit work, establishing Blueprint for Education, an advisory and evaluation firm focusing on STEM and education.

Lauren Conaway will receive the ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award, which honors emerging leaders who demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business, contribute time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community, and serve as role models for young women personally and professionally.

Lauren is the founder and CEO of InnovateHER KC, an industry-agnostic leadership community serving women and gender minorities. Lauren and InnovateHER KC work to create connectivity and break barriers to leadership for emerging and historically marginalized professionals. Her goal is to create a community that prioritizes people over profit and ethically drives innovation without exploitation. In addition, she co-hosts the Startup Hustle Podcast, with over 5 million downloads and a reach extending across 190+ countries.

Congratulations to both Marian and Lauren. Our hope is that these awards inspire others to achieve excellence in their personal and professional lives.
