FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEO

Soccer is on my mind today.

Overseas, Italians are thrilled and Brits are not, following Italy’s win in the final of the European Championship at Wembley Stadium. England came close, but lost in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Closer to home, at Children’s Mercy Park, the US Men’s National Team beat Haiti on Sunday 1-0 in its CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. Another match is set for Thursday between the U.S. team and Martinique. We’re hoping for a great turnout to show that Kansas City loves soccer and deserves to win its bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

I’m one of the members of the KC2026 Committee, a group of Kansas Citians working to convince FIFA that KC is the right place to host several of the 2026 games. It’s a long process. The latest FIFA request asked us to detail local efforts in promoting human rights. The Chamber was one of the many organizations that responded. In our case, we shared details of our Welcoming Plan for immigrants and refugees and our social justice work of the past year.

Hosting the World Cup would be an economic boon for our region and would shine a global spotlight on this place we call home.

Meanwhile, check out the new 90 by 90 foot wallscape at 1627 Main Street to support KC’s bid.
