Kansas City, Missouri – UMB Financial Corporation was nationally recognized by the American Bankers Association Foundation for its UMB Market with a 2021 ABA Foundation Community Commitment Award. The award was given to UMB for its efforts in the Financial Education category and was presented during ABA’s Annual Convention on Oct. 19 in Tampa, Fla.

The UMB Market, created by American Royal and UMB in 2016, is a grocery store and financial education simulation for students to practice healthy shopping on a budget. Due to COVID-19, the exhibit went virtual. UMB worked with three nonprofits to produce videos and worksheets so students could still have the real-world experience of budgeting and grocery shopping. In 2020, the virtual UMB Market reached nearly 10,000 students across 26 states and two continents. Visit more.umb.com/UMBMarket to practice shopping on a budget.

Entries were submitted in six categories including affordable housing, community and economic development, financial education, economic inclusion, protecting older Americans, and volunteerism. Award winners were chosen by a field of nationally-recognized experts.

The selection committee chose the winning banks based on the creativity and thoughtfulness of programs — traditional or innovative in nature and structure — that embody the ideals of corporate social responsibility and demonstrate success in measurable terms.

“UMB saw an opportunity to improve the lives of those in its community and took action,” said Corey Carlisle, executive director, ABA Foundation. “Its UMB Market made a meaningful difference in the bi-state Kansas City region and extended across the nation, and we hope their work serves as a blueprint for others throughout the industry.”

“UMB believes access to financial education is a key influencer of economic well-being and to that end, we offer signature financial education programs to meet our communities at every stage of life. The UMB Market is one of the ways we’re introducing financial concepts to people at a young age, so they can build a solid foundation of the basics of personal finance, including weighing our needs, versus our wants — and creating and sticking to a budget. UMB and our associates are always working to find new and innovative ways to positively impact our community,” said Mariner Kemper, Chairman, President and CEO of UMB Financial Corporation. “We are humbled and honored to accept this award for our efforts.”
