GEHA Introduces New CMO and CLO/GC to Executive Team

Lee’s Summit, Mo. – GEHA (Government Employees Health Association) announced today two new additions to its executive team. Dr. Paul Aitken has joined GEHA as chief medical officer, bringing decades of experience in the health care and insurance industry. Richard Bierman has been named chief legal officer/general counsel, with more than 20 years of legal experience in health care and insurance related fields.

“I am confident in the abilities of both Paul and Rich to contribute to the growing success of GEHA and our objectives towards better health and well-being for the members that we serve,” said Darren Taylor, GEHA president and CEO. “These are the final touches to building GEHA’s executive team, which will bring stability and clear direction to the entire organization.”

Dr. Aitken will lead the clinical division at GEHA, including the company’s clinical transformation strategy. He was previously senior medical director for clinical transformation at Aetna, after serving as medical director for national medical policy and operations. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Buffalo, completed residency training in Family and Community Medicine at Duke University and earned a Master’s in Public Health from Columbia University. 

“This is a transformative period for GEHA, and I look forward to helping the company improve the health care delivery model and empower members to be healthy and well,” said Aitken.

Bierman will oversee GEHA’s legal and compliance functions. He previously served as executive vice president and general counsel for HealthMarkets, Inc. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in American History and The History and Sociology of Science, and also earned his Juris Doctor at Penn Law.
