REMINDER: PLEASE SUBMIT IDEAS FOR THE DEI DIVERSE SPEAKER AND ORGANIZATION DATABASE TODAY!

In an effort to create impactful programming that is reflective of Kansas City, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is preparing to create a Diverse Speaker and Organization Database. The database will serve as a source for diverse speakers and organizations that can be explored by Centurions as we plan various initiatives. The contacts do not have to be your personal contacts. This may be someone you've seen, heard or read about in KC. It can be a diverse professional and/or leader at any level, not just the CEO. Be sure to also include contacts for any diverse chamber, community, and/or professional organization (i.e. LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, NAACP,  Prospanica, etc.). We are only asking for limited information, so please help us in populating this dynamic database. Submissions due no later than October 7. Click here to complete the form.

CENTURIONS DEI CHAT #2

Join us in community for chat #2 as we learn more about diversity, equity and inclusion and how we can each play a role in shaping the future of the Centurions program. Participants will spend time learning key concept and terms while exploring relative resources. We will have a lot time to have courageous conversations about DEI facilitated by Dr. Rodney D. Smith and Stephenie K. Smith, MSW of Sophic Solutions Consulting Group. Chat #2 takes place on Wednesday, October 9, from 4:30-6 p.m. at BNIM-Crown Center. Register here >>

SOCIAL AT 21C MUSEUM HOTEL

Join us for the first Fall Social of the year! We will be hosting a happy hour at the 21c Museum Hotel from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22. This event will be open to all Fall Centurions plus 1 guest. Drinks and appetizers will be provided along with the opportunity to visit the museum and explore the art at 21c. SHOW ME KC SCHOOLS

See for yourself on October 29! Hop on the bus with other community members who are interested in learning about Kansas City’s numerous and varied school options. Together we’ll visit four different schools and explore ways to impact Kansas City students long after the tours are over.

A TYPICAL TOUR SCHEDULE
8:00 a.m. – Meet for breakfast and introductions
8:30 a.m. – Hop on the bus
8:40 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. – Tours of four schools, a combination of KCPS and charter schools
1:00 p.m. – Return to meeting spot for lunch and a conversation with school leaders
2:00 p.m. – Goodbye!

Please plan to join us for the whole program from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sign-ups are first come, first served. Lunch is included. Only 30 spaces are available per tour and there is no fee to participate!

Join us for this ground-breaking event jointly hosted by the DEI Committees of the Spring and Fall Centurions cohorts in the KC Chamber Board Room. This event is for Spring and Fall actives, plus Alumni. We’ll hear from expert speakers and work in small groups. The event will equip individuals with tools and strategies to be more active DEI advocates, create community among actives and alums, and set the stage for future programming.

PRIVATE WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE TOUR

Don’t miss your chance to participate in the very unique opportunity to get a private tour. Whiteman is the home of the 509th Bomb Wing, which operates and maintains the Air Force's premier weapon system, the B-2 bomber. The B-2 brings massive firepower to bear, in a short time, anywhere on the globe through previously impenetrable defenses. We will tour the Wing Headquarters, get a Bomb Wing Missions Brief, tour a B2 Stealth Bomber and tour the Operation Support Squadron. This tour takes place on November 15 from 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Please see the below special requirements.

Special Requirements: Limited to US citizens only. Full legal name (Last, First, MI), full SSN, Date of Birth, Drivers Licenses Number, State, US Citizenship (Y/N) must be submitted to Lindsay Jarquio via phone (816-374-5493) no later than October 15. No last minute adds or changes. You must bring a valid/non-expired government issued photo ID. This tour will be limited to 40 attendees.

Save the date! Alumni and actives join forces to spruce up and upgrade the Happy Bottoms space in advance of the annual Attitude of Gratitude celebration.(Check out and register for Attitude of Gratitude here: https://www.happybottoms.org/aog2019.) Six alumni and six actives are requested per shift.

1:00 – 4:00 p.m.: Apply second coat of paint and perform clean-up

Jewish Vocational Services Young Professional Board; Mission: The JVS Young Professionals Board (YPB) is a way for young leaders, ages 22-35, to get involved in the work of JVS. The goal of the YPB is to raise funds for the agency annually, create awareness of JVS' work, engage other young professionals, and learn about board leadership.

In God’s Corner Ministry; Mission: In God's Corner Ministry: Where Mental Health and Faith Connect addresses the stigma of mental illness by offering educational events, a podcast, resources, and support groups.

American Red Cross of Greater Kansas City; Mission: Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Friends of Johnson County Library; Mission: The purpose of the Friends is to bring together individuals interested in the Johnson County Library system, promote informed community interest in the Library functions, resources, services and needs and to raise supplementary funds for Johnson County Library.

Altered Stories Ministry; Mission:  Altered Stories Ministry helps women share their God stories so women across the world can hear them. 

Nonprofit Connect; Mission: Nonprofit Connect links the nonprofit community to education, resources and netwrking so organizations can more effectively achieve their missions.

All volunteer opportunities are now open to both classes and are on a first-come, first-served basis. We have moved to one calendar on VolunteerMark that everyone will use to sign up for opportunities. This was the overwhelming feedback that volunteer opportunities are a great way to have both classes connect. This also means that opportunities are open “year-round” for everyone, which we will track by program year (Fall: July 1-June 30 and Spring: Feb 1-Jan 31).

FUNKY & FESTIVE: HOLIDAY HIGH-JINX

Before turning the page to 2020, let's flash back and toast the holidays in high, tacky fashion. Our final social of 2019 will include festive libations at Lew’s Bar & Grill before we depart for a local hot spot that’s sure to be funky. Come dressed to impress in your jolly holiday best, be it a tacky sweater or Christmas costume from yesteryear. In order to secure appropriate transportation, the deadline to register is Wednesday, Nov. 20. More details to come in GroupMe.
