LUC: RETHINKING THE COMMUNITY ROLE OF ART MUSEUMS TO BROADEN INCLUSION

Saralyn Hardy, the Marilyn Stokstad Director of the Spencer Museum of Art on Kansas University’s campus, will moderate a conversation with Casey Claps, Manager of Strategy & Planning at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Casey has been the primary force and mind behind many of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art’s recent and brilliant initiatives: Art Mini-Golf, the purchase and preservation of the Tivoli Cinema, Thou Mayest Coffee (formerly Quay Coffee) in the Bloch Building. These efforts have reoriented the Nelson-Atkins’ relationship to the community. By broadening the ways in which the Nelson-Atkins interacts with the community, Casey has broadened the inclusion and community-ownership of the Nelson-Atkins. Casey’s continued work at the Nelson-Atkins is redefining the role we see for an art museum in our community. This LUC occurs on December 12 at 5 p.m. To learn more, follow the link to register here >>

REMINDER: SIGN UP TO ACCESS SERVICE PROJECTS ON VOLUNTEERMARK

All volunteer opportunities are now open to both classes and are on a first-come, first-served basis. We have moved to one calendar on VolunteerMark that everyone will use to sign up for opportunities. This was the overwhelming feedback that volunteer opportunities are a great way to have both classes connect. This also means that opportunities are open “year-round” for everyone, which we will track by program year (Fall: July 1-June 30 and Spring: Feb 1-Jan 31).

Ready to serve? Check out VolunteerMark for a few opportunities that are still in need of volunteers. Check the calendar regularly as new projects are added weekly and look for newsletter announcements or GroupMe to sign-up for projects in which spots still need to be filled.

SPRING

SECOND YEAR EXECUTIVE BREAKFAST – SURVEY DUE 11/21

In 2016 we started hosting a breakfast for our graduating Centurions and their executives. At this breakfast, 2nd year Steering members will present your accomplishments over the last two years (Legacy project, task force topics, leaders you’ve heard from, etc.). We received really great feedback, so we are continuing the tradition again this year on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 in the KC Chamber Boardroom (Union Station, first floor).

Next steps: We would like to mail formal invitations to your CEO, Supervisor, and/or a Board member within the next few weeks, but we need your help! We understand that your leadership may have changed since you started the program, and we want to make sure we are sending invitations to the right people.

Even if you cannot attend, we still encourage you to invite your executives. This is their opportunity to see all the hard work you have put into the program over the last two years. Your executive will be confident their investment in the program will return a more engaged, educated, thoughtful, and connected leader. If your executives cannot attend, but you can, that’s great too!

IUC: THE MAKER MARKETPLACE AND HOW ENTREPRENEURS ARE REMAKING KANSAS CITY’S ECONOMY

During the Spring Cohort’s Benchmarking Trip to Portland, Oregon, Centurions were exposed to Portland’s rich maker and entrepreneurial culture. Back here at home, Centurions can experience how local makers, artisans, and entrepreneurs are remaking our city’s economy. Made in KC has been at the epicenter of KC’s maker explosion, not to mention they have their own local entrepreneurial success story to share. On November 19 at 5 p.m., Centurions will have the opportunity to discuss what KC consumers are buying, how makers scale their small batch wares and bring them to market, and why it’s important to shop local. After the discussion, Centurions are encouraged to beat the Black Friday crowds and get a head start on their holiday shopping by supporting our local entrepreneurs and makers! Register here >>
