CONGRATULATIONS KAREN ROGERS, 2022 BERNARD POWELL AWARD RECIPIENT

We are pleased to announce Karen Rogers as the 2022 recipient of the Bernard Powell Award. Karen Rogers is a fierce advocate for social justice and civil rights who leverages her privilege to seek justice for people who are marginalized and underrepresented. She is a committed volunteer, utilizing her time and talents, for a number of causes including education and responsible gun legislation.

Karen spent 18 years as an education attorney for multiple organizations including a seven-year stint with the U.S. Department of Education where she investigated complaints of discrimination against students. Over the past several years Karen has become involved with the Missouri chapter of Moms Demand Action Against Gun Violence and at the end of 2017, she metamorphosized her legal career by leaving her position with the U.S. Department of Education to assume an unpaid state leadership role for Moms Demand Action. Karen now serves as the deputy chapter lead and statewide legislative lead for the organization's Missouri chapter, where she works for responsible gun violence prevention laws at the local, state and federal levels. In August 2021, Karen co-founded Liberty Parents for Public Schools, a grassroots group of parents who supported efforts to promote health, safety, and equity in the Liberty Public School District. She subsequently ran for and won a seat on the LPS Board of Education and was recently sworn in for a three-year term. Karen will be recognized at the Annual Alumni Luncheon June 28.
