Your Chamber At Work - December 19, 2016

In the Christmas movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” George Bailey tells Clarence the angel he needs money. Clarence tells him, “We don’t use money in Heaven,” to which George replies:  “Well, it comes in real handy down here, bud!”
If you’re a startup, you know George’s predicament. Entrepreneurs tell us their number one issue is funding. That’s one of the reasons the Chamber has been a long-time supporter of the venture capital forum InvestMidwest.
This year, InvestMidwest returns to Kansas City March 28 and 29. A total of 40 to 45 companies will have an opportunity to showcase their businesses to investors and potential investors. The v.c. forum focuses on three industry tracks:  life sciences, technology, and food/ag/bioenergy.
If you’re interested, the deadline to apply to be a presenter is January 13. Click here for the application. And if you’re looking for investment opportunities, mark your calendars for March 28 and 29.
In the meantime, I wish you and yours the very happiest of holidays!

More than 1500 small businesses were recently nominated for Small Business of the Year. There’s just about a month to get together all of the information that you need to apply for the Mr. K Award or one of our four specialty awards. This is an excellent opportunity for you to reflect back on the year and your goals and achievements. Our panel of judges will want to know all about them!
If you’re a KC Chamber member with fewer than 250 employees who can demonstrate business growth, excellent employee relations, and service to the community – all the tenets of success as established by Small Business of the Year Award namesake Ewing Kauffman – please apply for the Mr. K Award. If you’re a small business that’s been in business for more than 15 years, you could be our Legacy of Kansas City. If your company is less than three years old, you could be our Entrepreneur of the Year. If yours is a minority-, woman-, veteran-, or LGBT-owned business that emphasizes a culture of diversity in your company, you could be our Diverse Small Business of the Year. And companies that are increasing Kansas City’s global footprint could take home our International Small Business of the Year Award.
There’s just one online application to fill out, and your responses will determine which awards you qualify for. Please don’t forget that the deadline to apply is January 27.
