Your Chamber At Work - January 23, 2017

FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEO

The inaugural festivities are over, the new Congress is in session, and the KC Chamber is hard at work on our 2017 Federal Affairs agenda as well as looking at regional infrastructure projects requiring federal funding.

Over the next few weeks, we have several sessions planned to get our members’ input on federal issues ranging from infrastructure, transportation, and regulatory reform to banking and federal tax policy. Our World Trade Center investors are weighing in on trade policy; our Superintendents Forum is looking at education policy, and our Energy & Environment Committee is looking at energy policy. The Chamber’s Federal Affairs Committee, with guidance from our Public Policy Council, will create a draft agenda, which is expected to be approved by the Board at its February meeting. To share your thoughts on federal issues to include in the agenda, please contact me.

Meanwhile, we’re talking with a number of area governments and organizations like Port KC and the KC Industrial Council about shovel-ready infrastructure projects in the region that could be funded if President Trump’s proposed infrastructure bill comes to pass. As we learned from Dallas officials on our recent Leadership Exchange trip, if dollars suddenly appear, those cities with projects ready to go are more likely to receive funding. Kansas City needs to be ready if and when that happens. The Chamber will work with our partners to support KC projects.

ONE WEEK LEFT TO APPLY FOR SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS

If your KC-based small business has been having a good run, with increasing revenues, happy camper employees, and a generous streak of philanthropy, then you should definitely apply for the KC Chamber’s Small Business Awards. Chamber members who were nominated for Small Business of the Year can apply for the 2017 Mr. K Award, named for Kansas City icon Ewing Kauffman.

There is no nomination required for the other four awards! Legacy of Kansas City Award is exclusively for companies in business more than 15 years. Diverse Small Business of the Year Award is for minority-owned, woman-owned, veteran-owned, service disabled veteran-owned, or LGBT-owned companies that make diversity a high priority in their business culture. Entrepreneur of the Year Award will be given to a fast-growing company making its mark in KC after having been in business for less than 3 years. And the International Small Business of the Year will be helping to grow KC’s global footprint.

There is one application for all awards, and it can be found online here. For more information, please contact Laura Dryden, the Chamber’s Small Business Manager, at (816) 374-5444.
