The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is pleased to host a special, once-in-a-lifetime event, “Big KC's Salute to Baseball.” The evening will be filled with surprises and retrospect for business and baseball in our community including a tribute to the man who brought baseball to Kansas City, our own hometown entrepreneur and business icon Ewing M. Kauffman. Mr. K was not only known as a terrific business mind, he was also a beloved owner who wanted, more than anything, a winning baseball team for our city. His daughter, Julia Irene Kauffman
, will serve as our honorary chair.
As a clear indication of just how much Ewing Kauffman was admired, a panel of local baseball heroes from the 1985 World Series team, baseball notables and a cast of other stars will descend on the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts to pay tribute. Our baseball celebrities include Royals greats Hal McRae
, Frank White
, Bret Saberhagen
, Jim Sundberg
and former Royals General Manager John Schuerholz
, who is currently President of the Atlanta Braves. Famed Royal announcers Fred White
and Denny Matthews
will put their own spin on the memorable '85 season. National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association 2011 Sportswriter of the Year Joe Posnanski
and ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jonathan Coachman
will lend their thoughts to the discussion too.
Our honored guests will delve into conversations around building a successful team, minor league systems, training and scouting, and free agency. You'll want to hear their discussions on the past and the future of America’s favorite game.
Get dressed up in your favorite creative baseball cocktail attire, and head out for a glamorous evening that combines the very best of sports and business.Who doesn't want to rub elbows with baseball heroes from past and present?
Sports Radio 810 will be conducting live interviews at the reception, and Metro Sports will be taping the show for broadcast at a later date. Peter deSilva, champion of the Big 5’s entrepreneurship initiative and Chairman & CEO of UMB Bank, will be co-hosting the event along with Jim Heeter, President & CEO of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. Join us for an evening filled with memories, laughs, and a reminder of the glory years of baseball in Kansas City and beyond.
