FROM THE KC CHAMBER'S PRESIDENT AND CEO

The lists Kansas City continues to show up on are always interesting. A couple of the latest:  KC was named Number 1 for business growth in a national survey conducted by the Wendover Corporation. Fast Company named us Number 4 on the list of best cities for job hunters. And, ICYMI, The Washington Post called us “In” for 2017.

Meanwhile, the number 19 includes Missouri and Kansas. Two of 19 states that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act despite the lobbying efforts of your Chamber and other organizations.

We continue to advocate for expansion, and I’ll be testifying to that fact on Wednesday in Topeka, calling for expansion of KanCare (the Kansas version of Medicare). While the future of the ACA is under review right now in Washington, we need to make sure Kansas doesn’t lose a seat at the table to discuss replacement because the state failed to expand KanCare.

Kansas has already lost over $1.6 billion in taxes and fees paid by Kansans to support the ACA. Those dollars leave Kansas and go to Washington D.C. and other states. And the state will miss out on an estimated $2 billion in much-needed federal funds over the next five years.

My testimony is on behalf of HB 2064. If you agree, please let your legislator know.

Thanks.

HOW RESILIENT ARE YOU?

The Resilient KC ACEs survey will provide information about how Adverse Childhood Experiences can influence health, specifically in the Kansas City area. The survey can help prove connections between ACEs and health-related conditions, such as heart disease and depression. The survey will also be ranked in score for resiliency, which you can learn more about here, and the results will be anonymous.

Please take the survey here to participate. And encourage others as well. Resilient KC is a community-wide effort to build a trauma informed and resilient community – it’s a partnership between the KC Chamber’s Healthy KC initiative and Trauma Matters KC.
