Your Chamber At Work - November 13, 2017

I’d like to share two things with you this week.

First, I’m still smiling – and still a little stunned – by the overwhelming vote last week for “A Better KCI.” Tim Cowden of the Kansas City Area Development Council and I have been giving presentations on the need for a new single terminal since May, and I’d sensed the momentum shifting toward a ‘yes’ vote during the last few months, but I was still amazed at the final count:  75 percent in favor. Kansas City, Missouri voters come through yet again, and the entire region will benefit with a world-class, Kansas City – style airport.
Thanks to KCADC and the Civic Council, our collaboration on this important issue was instrumental in bringing people on board and winning the election.
Second, the Chamber Board of Directors has unanimously elected new officers and board members for 2017-18. Matt Condon, CEO of the two companies he founded – ARC Physical Therapy+ and Bardavon Innovations – is our new Chamber Chair. In addition to serving on the Chamber Board and as an officer these last four years, Matt has been Champion of our Big 5 entrepreneurship initiative.
Rounding out the slate of new officers:  Michael Hagedorn of UMB, Chair Elect; Gordon Lansford of JE Dunn, Vice Chair; Carolyn Watley of CBIZ, Treasurer; and Karen Daniel, Immediate Past Chair. Click here to see the new Board members elected for the coming year.
All in all, a stellar group. We’ll be honoring Matt and Karen at our upcoming Annual Dinner November 21. Click here if you’d like to attend.

A dynamic panel of Chamber members will share their stories with you on November 16. KCSourcelink is presenting a networking and educational event on Why Your Business Should Participate in Award Competitions as part of 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Week Kansas City. From 4-5:30 pm at Plexpod Westport Commons, 300 E. 39th St, Room 1-M, representatives from Adams-Gabbert & Associates, Alpha Energy & Electric, BNIM, and Sage Restoration will offer up their experiences, as moderated by Connie and Aaron Zack, the owners of Sunlighten. All of the companies have benefitted in the past from the exposure that award program participation can offer. This event is free; you can register here.

Sullivan Higdon & Sink will be hosting the November Morning Schmooze networking event at their office on November 17 at 2000 Central in Kansas City, MO from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The agency’s focus areas include food, marketing to men, aerospace, and big brand start-ups. Their team hates sheep because it reminds them of marketing that follows instead of leads, docile ideas that inherently blend in. So many brands fade into a bleating flock of competitors, indistinguishable and mostly ignored. SHS has been built to think beyond the borders of traditional marketing solutions. Morning Schmooze is networking free for KC Chamber members and $15 for non-members. You can register for the event here. For more information, contact Tayler Hammersmith, (816) 374-5480 or email Thank you to Morning Schmooze sponsor Ruckus Creative Group, and 2017 networking sponsors MazumaSprint, and University Health.

On December 14, at the next KC Chamber Polsinelli Public Policy Speaker Series event, pollster Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies will break down a variety of national polling data and provide an up-to-the minute analysis of what is driving the American voter at this point in time, including the Trump Effect. The event will be held at the InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza, 401 Ward Parkway, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. This will be an up-to-date, KC-centric look at the 2018 midterms, including projections and banter about the red state-blue state prospects for the next federal elections. Cost to attend is $40 for KC Chamber members, and $55 for non-members. Register here and let Shavon Brown know if you have questions, (816) 374-5406 or email Thank you to Polsinelli for their support of this informative series!
