Centurions Leadership Celebrating 40 Years: Wendy Guillies

In 1976, the KC Chamber launched a new program designed to prepare Kansas City’s leaders of tomorrow. They called it the Centurions Leadership program. Throughout 2017, in honor of the Centurions 40th Anniversary, we’ll be sharing some of the stories of Centurions alumni.

Wendy GuilliesWhere were you in your career when you went through the Centurions program?
I had just been named the Vice President of Communications at the Kauffman Foundation and wanted to have a broader understanding of the KC Community.

What would you say about the program to companies that have never participated in Centurions?
What are you waiting for?! Centurions is a wonderful way to develop and retain talented people in your organization because the program equips them with the knowledge and network to become more successful in work and in life.

What is your fondest memory during your time as a Centurion?
There were many, but I think the trip to Nashville was my favorite. I had been in the program for nearly a year at that point and had made some great friends. We learned a lot in Nashville and had a ball doing so.

How did Centurions make you a better leader?
I feel it made me a more well-rounded citizen of this community. It gave me new perspectives and a new network of amazing professionals.

What did Centurions teach you about service and giving back to the community? Tell us about one of your most meaningful service experiences?
Spending time at Harvesters was my favorite. Not only did I have a chance to work alongside by Centurions colleagues, I developed a deeper appreciation for what the organization does to help those in our community who are hungry. It really gave me perspective.

What advice would you give to current and future Centurions?
You’ll get out of it what you put into it, so give it your all and enjoy the experience fully.

How has Kansas City changed since you were in Centurions?
There’s been such progress and momentum in KC since I was in Centurions – I bet it’s an even more exciting time to be in the program!

What boards do you currently serve on?
GKC Chamber, MRIGlobal, KC SourceLink, Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (UMKC).
