Planting A Seed: Growing A Community Of Sustainability

Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Coalition of Area Employers Working Together To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Improve Quality of Life

The Greater Kansas City Climate Protection Partnership, coordinated by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, offers businesses and organizations the opportunity to lead the community toward the complementary goals of reduced regional greenhouse gas emissions and increased economic competitiveness.

Greater Kansas City employers are in a unique position to contribute to solutions to address climate change. Innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial talent—all in abundant supply within our business community—are essential to success. The relationships employers have with their customers, partners, and employees are crucial to communicating the information needed to effect positive change.

The Chamber was pleased to have the Chief Administrative Officer of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dan Beard, visit our offices on May 26, 2009. Mr. Beard was accompanied by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, who has long championed sustainability and green projects.

As part of Speaker Pelosi's "Greening the Capitol" initiative, Mr. Beard has begun to tour District offices to see what is being already done and what more can be done in our District spaces. We were fortunate he selected Kansas City as one of his first stops.

As a Climate Protection Partnership member, you know the importance of energy efficiency to our region. One of the chief tools we have to combat climate change is increased investment in energy efficiency. Many of the carbon reduction goals of the Partnership are expected to be met through energy efficiency.

The Chamber has worked over the last few years to raise awareness with policy makers about comprehensive energy strategies. We continue to do this important work. This year in Missouri, The Chamber is supporting legislation that promotes energy efficiency and sustainability. These goals match up with the Partnership. A coalition, the Energy Efficiency First coalition, was created to support energy efficiency initiatives. The coalition is being led by many key leaders The Chamber members are familiar with.

Please visit the website www.energyefficiencyfirst.com and consider joining the coalition for this important regional cause.
